Chalk Circle + Unraveling Threads

Neue Galerie im Höhmannhaus / Curator Avshalom Suliman

The installation “Chalk Circle” and the performance “Unraveling Threads” were both developed for the Neue Galerie im Höhmannhaus at the home town of Bertold Brecht, Augsburg, Germany.

The works pay homage to Bertolt Brecht’s influential play, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” while incorporating elements from the performances of the Israeli Women’s Movement, “Building an Alternative”, inspired by Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The merging of these two aspects highlights the universality of justice and its various manifestations across different eras and contexts. It prompts viewers to question the parallels between the struggles faced by the characters in “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” and the realities of the present day.

The work serves as a commentary on the complexities of justice and its ever-changing nature. By weaving together the narratives of Brecht and Atwood, the artwork invites viewers to examine the intricate relationship between power, morality, and societal structures. It encourages dialogue and introspection, challenging the audience to contemplate their role in shaping a just and equitable world.

At the opening of the exhibition in Neue Galerie im Höhmannhaus I did the performance “Unraveling Threads” that was developed together with Sally Krysztal and Avshalom Suliman.
